Actually she's a girl. It's zoicite that's a guy. In the manga, Queen Beryl was in the last years of the Silver Millenium, a peasant who was in love with Prince Endymion of the Earth Kingdom. She didn't like the idea that he was eloping with Princess Serenity of the Moon Kingdom because they knew it was forbidden and there would be consequences to that. She accepted Metaria's powers and became the Earth's regent queen and brainwashed The Shinnetou, Endymion's loyal guardians to do what she wanted them to do.

I liked the manga better because it portrayed Beryl in a more tragic light.
